What is the treatment for West Nile Virus infection?

There is no specific treatment for infections caused by West Nile Virus, other than to treat the symptoms and provide supportive care. Most people with a mild case of the virus will fully recover with no treatment. In the case of West Nile Virus encephalitis, intensive supportive therapy may be required, often involving hospitalization, intravenous fluids and nutrition, respiratory support (ventilator), prevention of secondary infections (such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, etc.), and good nursing care. Elderly persons are at the highest risk of developing severe illness from West Nile Virus, so these individuals should promptly seek medical care if infection is suspected.
