Preventive Health Screenings

In addition to good nutrition and exercise, keeping your Body Mass Index, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Blood Glucose levels within healthy ranges can help you to maintain good quality health and improve your overall quality of life.

The Jackson County Health Department provides several health and wellness screenings and services that can help you know the important factors of your health. The Jackson County Health Department can measure height, total body weight, percentage of body fat, basal metabolic rate and fat mass using the Tanita Body Composition Analyzer. In addition, blood pressure screenings and waist circumference measures can be provided to you, all free of charge.

For a fee of $25, cholesterol (Total, HDL, LDL and Triglyceride) and blood glucose screenings can also be administered.

After any screenings a Jackson County Health Department nurse will provide you with information about each of these health factors, the healthy and unhealthy ranges for each and provide tips for improving or maintaining your numbers.

Tanita Body Composition Analyzer

Tanita Body Composition Analyzer is an FDA approved Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis that helps patients understand what is going on inside their bodies by categorizing weight into muscle mass, water, and body fat. This knowledge can help patients make better-informed decisions about their behavior.

  • For the most accurate results, patients should:

    • Be measured in bare feet
    • Be tested three to four hours after waking up in the morning
    • Have consumed no alcohol 48 hours before the test
    • Avoid eating or drinking (especially caffeinated product) four hours before the test.
    • Empty bladder 30 minutes before test.
    • Avoid diuretics for seven days before test (only if possible)

Body Mass Index (BMI)

This is a calculation based on height and weight that accurately measures whether a person is healthy, overweight or obese.

  • BMI Ranges

    • Underweight = <18.5
    • Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
    • Overweight = 25–29.9
    • Obesity = 30 or greater

Blood Pressure

Blood Pressure is the pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels, and is one of the principal vital signs. During each heartbeat, BP varies between a maximum (systolic) and a minimum (diastolic) pressure. Increased blood pressure over prolonged periods of time can lead to heart conditions, stroke, kidney damage.

  • Blood Pressure

    • Your Category Systolic Diastolic
    • Normal Below 120 and Below 80
    • Pre-Hypertension 120-139 or 80-89
    • Stage 1 Hypertension 140-159 or 90-99
    • Stage 2 Hypertension 160 or more or 100 or more
    • *Ranges may be lower for children and teenagers.
Talk to your child's doctor if you're concerned your child has high blood pressure.

Waist Circumference

Waist circumference is the distance around your natural waist (just above the navel).

Your body is made up of water, fat, protein, carbohydrate and various vitamins and minerals. If you have too much fat — especially if a lot of it is at your waist — you're at higher risk for such health problems as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes. That increases your risk for heart disease and stroke.

  • Waist Circumferences

    • Women35 inches or less
    • Men40 inches or less

Cholesterol

The body needs some cholesterol in order to function properly. The body makes cholesterol in the liver and it is found in certain foods. Too much cholesterol can cause health problems, such as heart disease. Fasting for at least eight hours prior to the test is recommended for most accurate results.

  • Types of Cholesterol

    • Total Cholesterol <200
    • LDL Bad Cholesterol < 100
    • HDL Good Cholesterol > 60
    • Triglycerides < 150

Blood Glucose

Blood glucose is the total amount of sugar in your blood. Blood Glucose levels that remains high over time can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. Fasting for at least eight hours prior to the test is recommended for most accurate results.

  • Fasting Glucose Levels

    • Ideal 70-100
    • Pre-diabetic 100-126
    • Diabetic >126 if repeated on at least two separate days
